A special meeting of the Board of the Metropolitan Sewerage District was held in the Boardroom of MSD's Administration Building at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 25, 2000. Chairman Blackburn presided with the following members present: Aceto, Field, Gantt, Kelly, Sobol, Spell and Venable.

Others present were: William Clarke, General Counsel, William H. Mull, General Manager, Julie Ball and John Coutlakis with the Asheville Citizen-Times, Jim Fatland, Tom Hartye, Marsha Kiser and Sondra Honeycutt, MSD.

At 3:05 p.m., Mr. Spell moved that the Board go into closed session to discuss a personnel matter. Mr. Venable seconded the motion. Voice vote was unanimous in favor of the motion.

At 3:37 p.m., the regular meeting was reconvened.

Mr. Spell moved that the Board approve entering into a one-year contract for the position of General Manager effective January 1, 2001 with Mr. Tom Hartye. He stated that Mr. Hartye was the successful candidate and the recommendation of the Search Committee from the selection process. Mr. Sobol seconded the motion. Mr. Kelly moved that the motion be amended to reflect an annual salary of $91,000.00. With no further discussion, roll call vote was as follows: 8 Ayes; 0 Nays.

Mr. Blackburn thanked Mr. Spell, Mr. Kelly and Mr. Sobol for their work on the Search Committee.

Mr. Hartye expressed his appreciation to the Board for their support. He stated that he is very excited about the position and hoped to keep things going as Mr. Mull did and looked forward to working with him in the coming year. Also, he feels the District has a first class staff.

Mr. Mull thanked the Board for the selection of Mr. Hartye and is confident he will do a good job.
